The University of Virginia is located in
the city of Charlottesville where it also operates a tertiary
care 600-bed hospital, which is part of the University of
Virginia Health System. All departments of the University
are located on the central grounds in Charlottesville. Departments
such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering
Physics in the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
are in close proximity to the Medical School. All major
research buildings of the School of Medicine, which includes
the Medical Research building (MR4) housing the Radiological
Research Laboratory and the new Biomedical Engineering and
Medical Sciences building (MR5), are contiguous or very
close to one another. In 2003 a new research whole-body
1.5 Tesla MRI system will be installed in a $1 million annex
building currently under construction adjacent to the Hospital
Emergency Room. This state-of-the-art MRI system, which
is part of the Siemens/University of Virginia collaborative
research and development program, will have special features
for neurological and cardiovascular investigations, such
as easy access for acute hospital-based patients and a separate
elevator for animal studies.
